objective function.
The quantity an optimization model maximises or minimises, such as total cost, distance, delay or margin.
worked examplewhat counts as betterMinimise total waiting time of ships, plus a cost per crane shift. Change the weights and a different plan becomes the best one, so the team sets them on purpose.
in plain language
The objective states what "best" means. Real decisions often have several goals: cost, punctuality, fairness, emissions. They are combined with weights, ranked in priority order, or traded off explicitly as a set of alternatives. The choice is a management decision, not a technical one.
objective function, on your own decision.
Bring one recurring decision. Your planners see the terms of this glossary applied to their own rules and data.
