optimality gap.
The distance between the best plan found and the best plan that could possibly exist, as proven by the solver's bound.
worked examplebest plan 102, bound 100The best plan found costs 102. The solver's bound shows no plan can cost less than 100. The gap is 2 %. At 0.0 % the two meet: no better plan exists for the model as stated.
in plain language
While solving, a MIP solver keeps two numbers: the value of the best plan found so far and a bound that no plan can beat. The gap between them shrinks as the search proceeds. A gap of zero means the plan is proven optimal. A gap of half a percent means no plan can be more than half a percent better.
